Online Appendix for “Networks in Conflict: Theory and Evidence from the Great War of Africa”

In this Appendix we provide additional results complementing the discussion in the main part of the paper. First, Appendix A.1 complements the discussion in Section 2.2.1. In particular, in Appendix A.1.2 we consider networks in which the spillover parameters β and γ are small. This special case allows us to build additional intuition for the interpretation of our centrality measure of equation (8), and relate it to other existing centrality measures in the literature that are discussed in Appendix A.1.1. Appendix A.2 provides the proofs related to the material of Section 2.4. Appendix A.3 gives a complete characterization of the groups whose removal results in the greatest reduction in the rent dissipation that are analyzed in Section 5.1. In Appendix A.4 we develop the theoretical underpinning of the arms embargo that has been introduced in Section 5.2. Finally, additional results related to our dataset, the estimation method and policy analysis can be found in Appendix B.
